RamayanaР’В was an important influence on laterР’В SanskritР’В poetry and Hindu life and culture. It depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal wife and the ideal king.

InР’В HinduР’В tradition, it is considered to be the adi-kavyaР’В (first poem).

It consists of nearly 24,000Р’В versesР’В (mostly set in the ShlokaР’В meter), divided into seven Kandas (books) and about 500 sargas (chapters). The RamayanaР’В is one of the largest ancient epics in world literature. It follows his banishment from the kingdom by his father KingР’В Dasharatha, his travels across forests in India with his wifeР’В SitaР’В and brotherР’В Lakshmana, the kidnapping of his wife byР’В Ravana, the demon king ofР’В Lanka, resulting in a war with him, and Rama's eventual return toР’В AyodhyaР’В to be crowned king. The epic, traditionally ascribed to theР’В sageР’В Valmiki, narrates the life ofР’В Rama, the legendary prince of theР’В Kosala Kingdom. Along with the Mahabharata, it forms theР’В SanskritР’В Itihasa.
